Bonus Project: Please Rewind Bench Pillow
I’ll admit that there are not a lot of pillows involved in my decor but I just can’t resist a good bench pillow. There’s something so appealing to me about that long skinny design space. It’s such a refreshing break from working on large quilts.
When finishing up the blocks for Please Rewind I noticed that the block size was the perfect starting point for a bench pillow. Most of the bench pillow designs that I’ve made previously have been connected to a holiday. Time for a more all-purpose design!
This pattern does require that you have the Please Rewind pattern.
Fabric Requirements for Bench Pillow (colors refer to the colors in the diagram):
3/4 yard Pink
1/4 yard Black
1/8 yard Light Blue
2.5” x WOF strip Grey
10” square Dark Grey
10” square Green
10” square Orange
10” square White
5” square Red
Additional materials needed:
2/3 yard Backing Fabric
20” x 42” piece of Batting
2/3 yard fabric for Envelope Back
To make the bench pillow top, follow all block instructions in the Please Rewind pattern to make one block.
Cut the additional pieces labeled on the diagram sheet.
Complete ALL Stitch and Flip Corners.
Then assemble pillow pieces, working from left to right across the diagram (in the lighter pink section).
Finish the pillow by adding the top and bottom strips (shown in darker pink).
Note: The light pink and dark pink sections are the SAME fabric and are different shades in the diagram to show that the center section needs to be pieced first.
Pillow Top should measure 38.5” long by 16.5” tall. Sandwich top with batting piece and a 20” x 42” piece of Backing. Quilt as desired. Trim back down to 38.5” long by 16.5” tall.
Making an Envelope Back:
• Cut the 2/3 yard of fabric into two pieces measuring 16.5" x 24".
• One each piece, fold over one 16.5" long raw edge by 1/4" and press. Fold this pressed edge again, by 1/4" to completely tuck in the raw edge. Top stitch at the folded edge using matching top and bobbin thread.
• Place one envelope back on top of the pillow, right sides together, aligning the 16.5" raw edge with the left edge of the pillow.. The folded hem is facing towards the center of the pillow. Pin in place.
• Place the second envelope back on top of the pillow, right sides together. This time align the 16.5"raw edge with the right side of the pillow. There will be a generous overlap of the two envelope back pieces. Pin in place.
• Sew around the entire pillow, using 1/2" seam.
• Using the overlapped opening, turn the pillow right side out and press the back.
• Stuff with a 16" x38" bench pillow form.
